In a significant strategic shift for its cell therapy pipeline, **AbelZeta Pharma** has reclaimed the global development and commercialization rights for **C-CAR039**, also known as **Prizlon-cel**. This asset, an innovative **CAR-T cell therapy** targeting **CD19** and **CD20**, was previously under a licensing agreement. By regaining full control, the company aims to accelerate the clinical development of this dual-targeted therapeutic candidate.
Alongside the consolidation of rights, the company announced that the **U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)** has cleared its **Investigational New Drug (IND)** application for **C-CAR039**. This regulatory milestone paves the way for the initiation of clinical trials in the United States, specifically targeting patients suffering from **Large B-cell Lymphoma (LBCL)**.
**LBCL** is a subset of **non-Hodgkin lymphoma** that remains a challenging area of oncology. While current **CAR-T** treatments have revolutionized care, many patients still face relapsed or refractory disease. The dual-targeting approach of **Prizlon-cel** is designed to mitigate the risk of **antigen escape**, a phenomenon where cancer cells lose the expression of a single target, thereby rendering standard monotherapy **CAR-T** ineffective. By simultaneously addressing **CD19** and **CD20**, **C-CAR039** seeks to provide a more durable and robust response for patients with high-risk hematologic malignancies.
“Securing **FDA** clearance for our **IND** application is a pivotal moment for our clinical roadmap,” said a representative from **AbelZeta**. “With the full global rights to **Prizlon-cel** now back in our portfolio, we have the agility to optimize our clinical study protocols and move toward patient enrollment with greater operational focus.”
The company plans to leverage its existing infrastructure and technical expertise to advance this therapeutic candidate. Industry analysts are closely watching this development, as dual-targeting **CAR-T** platforms are increasingly viewed as the next frontier in improving **objective response rates (ORR)** and **complete response (CR)** durations in patients who have failed prior lines of chemotherapy or other immunotherapies.
The upcoming clinical trial will evaluate the **safety**, **tolerability**, and preliminary **efficacy** of the cell therapy in a domestic cohort. If successful, this trial could validate the long-term potential of **Prizlon-cel** as a standard-of-care option for refractory **LBCL**. The company expects to provide further updates on trial site activation and enrollment timelines in the coming quarters.
